Choosing a garment style is only the first step in a custom apparel project. Fabric selection also affects comfort, appearance, durability, decoration quality and how the finished garment performs during daily use.
Cotton, polyester and blended fabrics each have different advantages. The best option depends on what the garment will be used for, how often it will be washed, the required decoration method and the environment in which it will be worn.
This guide explains the most common custom apparel fabrics and how to select a suitable material for T-shirts, polo shirts, hoodies, uniforms, sportswear, jackets, vests and aprons.
Two garments can look similar in a photograph but perform very differently after printing, embroidery and repeated washing.

Before production, the garment, fabric, artwork and decoration method should be reviewed together. Selecting each element separately can lead to poor print adhesion, uncomfortable embroidery or a garment that does not suit its intended use.
Cotton is one of the most common materials for custom T-shirts and casual apparel. It has a soft surface, comfortable hand feel and good breathability.

Compared with cotton, polyester normally dries faster and maintains its shape well after repeated use. It is suitable for garments that require movement, frequent washing or moisture-wicking performance.
Printing on polyester requires the correct production method. Excessive heat can affect the fabric, and some colored polyester materials can cause dye migration into printed artwork. The fabric color, ink and curing temperature should therefore be tested before bulk production.
Embroidery can also be applied to polyester garments, but the design size, stitch density and backing material must be selected carefully, particularly on lightweight or stretch fabrics.
Blended fabrics combine characteristics from both cotton and polyester. A cotton-polyester T-shirt can offer a softer feel than full polyester while providing better shape retention and faster drying than full cotton.
Blends are often selected for company uniforms, staff T-shirts, school apparel, event teams, everyday branded clothing and casual polo shirts.
The exact performance depends on the fabric composition. A cotton-rich blend will normally feel softer, while a polyester-rich blend may provide better durability and moisture management.
Blended fabrics can work with both printing and embroidery. However, the production method should still be tested because different fabric treatments, colors and stretch levels can affect the result.
Pique is a textured knitted fabric commonly used for polo shirts. Its structured appearance makes it a popular choice for company uniforms, school clothing, clubs and hospitality teams.
Pique fabric can be made from cotton, polyester or a blend of both materials. Embroidery is often recommended for pique polo shirts because a stitched chest logo complements the structured fabric. Screen printing is also possible, but very detailed or large printed artwork may be affected by the textured surface.
When choosing a polo shirt, consider fabric weight, breathability, collar structure and whether the garment will be worn indoors or outdoors.
Fleece fabrics are commonly used for hoodies, zip-up hoodies and warm team apparel. They may be made from cotton, polyester or blended materials.
Fleece garments provide warmth and a comfortable interior surface. They are suitable for school hoodies, company jackets, club apparel, event team clothing and casual uniforms.
Screen printing works well for larger front or back designs, while embroidery is often used for smaller chest logos. Heavy embroidery should be planned carefully because dense stitching can affect how the garment hangs.
Nylon and lightweight woven polyester fabrics are commonly used for windbreakers, lightweight jackets and outdoor apparel.
These materials provide protection from light wind and are easy to carry. However, their smooth or coated surfaces require special attention during printing. High temperatures may damage lightweight fabric or affect a water-resistant coating. Large embroidery designs may also pull or distort thin materials.
For these garments, smaller logos, controlled heat and suitable backing materials are generally recommended. A production test helps confirm adhesion, appearance and fabric stability.
Cotton and cotton-rich blends are normally reliable choices for traditional screen printing. Their surfaces can provide good ink coverage and clear artwork.
Polyester and performance fabrics can also be printed, but they may require specialized inks, lower curing temperatures or testing for dye migration.
The best fabric depends on garment color, artwork size, number of colors, fabric composition, stretch level, intended use and washing requirements. A fabric that works well for a small chest logo may not produce the same result with a large full-back design.
Embroidery works best on fabrics that can support the weight and tension of the stitches.
